Celebrating 30 Years of Volta: A Legacy of People, Purpose, and Progress
Thirty years ago, three guys got together to start a company reselling IBM servers to school systems in Kentucky. They worked from their basements and homes before renting a brick-and-mortar space in downtown Lexington. Over time, the company scaled up, rebranded, and grew into the Volta we know today—a coalition of IT experts, ready to take on any challenge.
To lift the veil for a moment, I’m Lauren Sevigny, the Content Manager at Volta. My dad, Dave Sevigny, was one of those three guys who started DMD Data Systems in 1996. Back then, all I knew was that Dad stayed at home while Mom worked 9-to-5, which I thought was great because Dad was the better cook anyway. What I didn’t realize at the time was that he was working tirelessly to build this business.
Fast forward to today, and the opportunity to work for this company has defined my professional trajectory and career. At Volta, we truly operate like a family. While that may sound cliché, it’s a sentiment shared by many who work here. To honor our 30th year in business, I asked our team of Directors to reflect on what Volta has meant to them, our customers, and the communities we serve.
The Heart of Volta: Our People

For Marshall Butler, Volta’s president, the journey has been defined by the people who make up the company. “Every employee is critically important to the success of the business,” he shared. “The impact over the years has been coming to work every day and watching the sales and engineering teams solve business problems for our clients that they never thought we could solve.”
Craig Meadows, our Director of Sales and Marketing, echoed this sentiment. “Volta’s culture has endured because it’s always built around people. For the past 30 years, we’ve been intentional about hiring the right people—those who are a strong fit not just for the role, but for the company as a whole. That focus has allowed our culture to remain a core part of how we work, succeed, and grow.”

For Miles Cox, our COO, the relationships he’s built at Volta have been transformative. “Volta took a chance on me as a young, inexperienced kid straight out of college and supported my career development every step of the way. The mentorship and guidance I’ve received from my coworkers have shaped me into the person I am today.”
Mentorship and career nurturing has always been a central tenant of our workplace culture. When asked what his message to future Voltans would be, Matt Duvall, our Director of Services said, “You’ll learn a lot working in a small business. You get exposed to a wide range of opportunities and work alongside smart people. What you do matters, and your decisions directly impact our clients’ businesses. If you remain committed to client needs and pay attention to the details, you’ll contribute significantly to the growth of our business as well as your own professional development.”

A Legacy of Service and Trust
When asked to describe Volta’s legacy in one word or phrase, the answers were as diverse as they were meaningful: “Trustworthy,” said Shana Watson, our Director of HR. “Commitment to Service & Culture,” added Miles. For Marshall, it’s “Great teams can accomplish great things,” while Craig simply said, “People.” These words reflect the core of who we are as a company.

Shana shared a story that perfectly captures the spirit of Volta: a team-building event where employees worked together to solve clues in a scavenger hunt, ultimately building bikes for underprivileged families. “To see the joy on their faces when we presented them with bikes of their own was very special and humbling,” she said. “And knowing that we did that working together made it even more meaningful.”
Looking Ahead: The Next 30 Years
As we celebrate this milestone, we’re also looking to the future. Marshall envisions Volta continuing to evolve to meet the changing technology needs of our clients while making a lasting impact on the communities we serve. Craig sees us staying true to our boutique approach, designing tailored solutions for our customers. And Miles dreams of a future where Volta remains committed to an inclusive culture of hard workers who consistently deliver high-quality services and solutions.

This anniversary is a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and to celebrate the people who have made it all possible. Volta’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and, above all, people. Here’s to the next 30 years of making a difference—together.
